Minions in Clash of Clans: Minions are the initial dark elixir troop available in the game, automatically unlocked upon the completion of the Dark Barracks. These fast and weak air troops have a short range, utilizing Dark Elixir to inflict damage on their targets.
This terror of the skies was born out of Dark Elixir. Undetectable by the Seeking Air Mine, Minions materialize with ease, but are fragile in our world.
Appearance
Resembling gargoyles with large horns, stubby wings, and sharp claws covered in Dark Elixir, Minions exhibit a unique and menacing appearance.
Special Traits
Minions are immune to Seeking Air Mines and lack a preferred target, attacking the closest building. However, they shift focus to enemy Clan Castle troops, Heroes, or Skeleton Trap skeletons when aware of their presence.
Strategies for Using Minions
Offensive Strategy
Despite their low health, Minions are valuable utility troops. Various offensive strategies capitalize on their strengths:
Building Picking
Deploy a small number of Minions (around 3) to eliminate ground-defense-protected buildings efficiently, especially in Clan Wars.
Group Rush
Minions, being cost-effective and occupying only 2 housing spaces, are ideal for group rush strategies.
Balloonion Strategy
In the Balloonion attack, Minions play a crucial role in cleaning up behind Balloons after taking down the initial defenses.
Lavaloonion Variant
Lava Hounds shield Minions and Balloons in the Lavaloonion strategy, effectively dealing with anti-air defenses.
Single Player Campaign
Minions, along with patience, are powerful in the Single Player Campaign, where there’s no time limit.
Defensive Strategy
Countering Minions
Strategically place Air Bombs deeper inside the base to counter Minion swarms. Cover Air Defenses, Wizard Towers, X-Bows, and Archer Towers to prevent Minion sneak attacks.
Clan Castle Defense
Minions in the Clan Castle can disrupt strategies relying on troops unable to target aerial units.

Minion Fun Facts in Clash of Clans
- Introduction into the Game
- The Minion made its debut in Clash of Clans through the 12 March 2013 update, sharing the spotlight with the Hog Rider and Valkyrie. This marked their entry as the first Dark Elixir Troops in the game.
- Gargoyle-Inspired Design
- The Minion’s design draws inspiration from gargoyles, fantasy monsters associated with architectural elements. In mythology, gargoyles were believed to ward off evil spirits, and the notion of them physically coming to life is a more recent concept. Often made of magically animated stone, they can have animal or chimera traits, acting as guardians of places like cathedrals or castles.
- Cultural Translations
- In the Japanese and French language settings of the game, the Minion’s name translates to “Gargoyle,” reflecting its design inspiration.
- Maximum Deployment Capabilities
- Players can deploy a maximum of 160 Minions with fully upgraded Army Camps, extending to 185 when including the 25 that fit into a fully upgraded Clan Castle. On the battlefield, an additional 84 Minions can be cloned using four fully upgraded Clone Spells, resulting in a grand total of 269 Minions.
- Quirky Interaction
- Tapping on the Army Camp triggers a unique Minion animation where it “sneezes,” with this behavior becoming more pronounced at levels 6 to 8.
- Speed Records
- The Minion holds the title of the fastest flying unit and is among the fastest troops overall, alongside the Goblin, Sneaky Goblin, and Headhunter.
- Haste Spell Effect
- Minions, Goblins, and Sneaky Goblins can achieve a remarkable speed of up to 7.8 tiles per second under the influence of a maximum-level Haste Spell.
- Community Suggestions
- The concept of the Minion, often referred to as a gargoyle, was suggested by a forum user on January 13, 2013, highlighting the collaborative nature of game development.
Undetectable by Seeking Air Mine
- The Minion stands out as the sole flying troop in Clash of Clans that remains undetectable by the Seeking Air Mine, excluding sub-troops like the Lava Pup and Ice Pup.
- Color Swap Incident
- In an unexpected turn, the colors of levels 1-2 Minion and levels 3-4 Minion were swapped in the 17 June 2013 update. Fortunately, this unintentional change was promptly corrected on 24 June 2013.
- Clash Royale Distinction
- Unlike their counterparts in Clash Royale, Clash of Clans Minions are depicted vomiting Dark Elixir instead of throwing it with their arms. This distinction may explain the observed longer range in Clash of Clans Minions.
- Agility in Action
- An interesting tidbit reveals that a moving Minion can outpace an Air Bomb, showcasing its agility and nimbleness in evading potential threats.
- Cross-Game Skins
- The Star Level 3 skins of Minions and Minion Horde in Clash Royale bear a striking resemblance to the level 3 Minion in Clash of Clans, adding a cross-game visual connection for players.
