Root Rider Clash of Clans, a formidable Elixir Troop, becomes available upon unlocking a level 17 Barracks, a feat achievable with a Town Hall level of 15.
Mounted on a mobile tree root, the Root Rider engages in battles with a unique approach. This defense-focused troop boasts substantial hitpoints but exhibits moderate damage output and a deliberate pace. Notably, the Root Rider possesses the ability to swiftly dismantle Walls as she traverses them with her root.
Target Prioritization
Root Riders exhibit a distinct preference for defensive structures, ignoring other enemy buildings and troops as long as defenses remain on the battlefield. Even when confronted by enemy Clan Castle troops, heroes, or Skeleton Trap skeletons, they stay committed to targeting defensive structures. It’s worth noting that, like other defense-focused troops, the Clan Castle is not considered a defense, irrespective of the presence of enemy troops. However, the defending Grand Warden and the activated Town Hall weapon are recognized as defensive structures.
Post-Defense Phase
Once all defenses are eradicated, Root Riders shift to a standard troop behavior, attacking the nearest building without a specific preference. They only engage enemy units if they pose a threat and will not switch targets until their current objective is eliminated.
Movement Speed and Wall Interaction
The Root Rider’s intentionally slow movement speed results in the natural destruction of Walls as she traverses them. However, a strategic deployment of a Rage Spell or Haste Spell showcases her ability to bypass Walls without destroying them.
Defensive Actions
\Defensive Root Riders refrain from damaging the village’s own Walls. To counter their wall-breaking capabilities, defensive strategies involve organizing defenses to limit the Root Rider’s effectiveness, especially by creating multiple compartments of defenses. Structures like resource storages with high hitpoints can impede the Root Rider’s progress.
Strategies
Offensive Strategy
Root Riders, with their substantial hitpoints, excel at breaking open Walls, providing a valuable alternative to Golems or other tank units. They can pave the way for other attackers to exploit the breached defenses.
Considerations
- The Root Rider operates similarly to a Mountain Golem, with moderate damage and slow speed.
- Unlike the Mountain Golem, the Root Rider COC takes time to destroy Walls rather than ignoring them.
Defensive Strategy
To minimize the Root Rider’s wall-breaking capabilities, defenses should be strategically positioned, creating multiple large compartments. Non-defensive structures with high hitpoints, such as resource storages, can act as barriers.
Additional Insights of Root Rider
- Root Riders offer substantial hitpoints for their housing space, comparable to P.E.K.K.As and Golems while occupying less space.
- In a max-level Clan Castle, there’s room for other potent defenders, maximizing the village’s stalling potential.
- However, Root Riders lack notable advantages beyond this, functioning as slow-attacking single-target units incapable of targeting air units.
Upgrade Differences
As the Root Rider advances through levels, notable visual changes occur:
- Initial: Green clothes with vine-like snake patterns, reddish-brown hair, and a brown giant root.
- Level 2: Yellow hair, pink clothes, and a spiked giant root.
- Level 3: Reverted hair color, blue clothes, a teal-like root with enlarged spikes.
Incorporating these strategic insights into your Clash of Clans gameplay can elevate your troop deployment and defensive planning, ensuring a more formidable presence on the battlefield.

The Root Rider Trivia
Did you know that in a set of fully upgraded Army Camps, you can deploy up to 16 Root Riders simultaneously? This limit increases to 18 when factoring in the 2 additional Root Riders that can be accommodated in a level 8 or higher Clan Castle. If you’re on the battlefield, you can further duplicate 8 more Root Riders using four fully upgraded Clone Spells (three from the regular spell inventory and one from a level 10 or higher Clan Castle), bringing the total to 26 Root Riders.
The Root Rider’s ability to demolish walls draws inspiration from the Mountain Golem’s Crush ability, which instantly obliterates walls upon contact. However, unlike the Mountain Golem, the Root Rider takes slightly more than a second to achieve the same feat.
